Dear Fit Rich,
Welcome to Master May! The question for this month is “How to grow your career 10x faster?” Years ago, I was called to a room. My senior sat down with a serious face.
“I’m sorry Ruby, but we need to let you go,” she said.
“Why?” I puzzled. It was an electric shock.
“There isn’t much for you to do so we decided to end the contract earlier.” She said.
It was my first job dismissal. I was desperate and depressed. The economy wasn’t great and the job market was shrinking.
It felt like the end of the world.
“How can I survive?” I panicked. My identity was swallowed, and my tears were fallin’. My market value was depreciated like the S&P500 stock index during COVID.
I asked myself, “Do you want to remain a victim, or fight back like a warrior?”
Just like my name Ruby, I am daring and durable. I may have flaws and cracks after dropping to rock bottom. But when life is tough, I shine the brightest. I fight back with my greatest strength.

Your worst time shapes your best quality.
So I ask myself, “What can you do now to create possibilities?”
When watching The Avengers, I always wonder which superhero I could be. In reality, anyone could be anything when you are willing to try. Therefore, I began to explore new things to unleash the superheroes in me.
I write blogs.
I teach kids.
I lead a public speaking club.
I play CrossFit.
I don’t have any certificates or degrees to approve me for wearing these hats. But I don’t need to.
With information accessible everywhere, you can self-learn anything.
The only thing you need is your passion.
When you are passionate enough about something, you prioritise time & energy to do it.
You practise more and become skilled.
With my mixed background, opportunities kept waving at me.
Being a blogger, I got my first client as a freelance writer.
As a blogger and marketing graduate, I got a digital marketer job at a Tech company, which then transformed me into a Product Associate internally.
With my product management and marketing experience, I become a Product Manager (PM) for Consumer Tech and Marketing Tech solutions.
As a public speaker, community builder and marketer, I become a digital content creator.
These equations are my other possibilities. The input is my experience and the output is my opportunity.
Teacher + PM = EdTech PM
Club President + PM = Product Lead
Public Speaker + Content Creator = Online coach
Event host + Marketing = Event Manager
Athlete + Teacher = Personal trainer
Public speaker + Teacher = Public Speaking Coach
And much more…
A combo of identities creates a new opportunity. You differentiate yourself. You have more choices.
With the rise of AI and global hiring, the job market has become more competitive. It is time to think about what you can do in favour of yourself - whether to become more employable by holding a sweet mix of expertise or to develop another income stream.
